we had a Giant Money Tree
for quite some time —
it arrived in brooklyn
and survived cat bites
and a big move
and multiple winters
and me not taking quite as good care of it
as i probably could have
and then a leak upstairs to down
and the cutting up of the ceiling
and drying it all out
with giant industrial fans
it was doing alright
but one wrong angle
it came toppling down
and it didn’t survive much longer after that

so we mourned it
and held our space where it used to thrive
put a snake plant there
but it doesn’t feel quite right
and finally
a year and a half
maybe two
later
we got a Little Money Tree at ikea
and hopefully this one
will thrive just like its predecessor
and hopefully hopefully hopefully
it will survive long past
how old the passed money tree lasted
because we now know
that industrial fans
are called so
for a
reason

how does one make a monstera thrive?

do you actually need to trim
the biggest leaves?

or is it a bigger pot that i need
to hold in all these trailing vine-roots
as they escape their confines
and go searching for something to climb?

or is it simply the air around us
better humidified would do it?
or maybe a spritz of water once
or twice
a day?

i mean, my monsteras are all fine
they’re doing
fine

but i really
desperately
want them to
thrive

i keep forgetting to water my poor orchid
i mean, i always remember the next day
but it is nice to take care of all the plants together

it feels like they’re all family that way.

we have a spider plant
transferred from my father’s domicile in ohio
all the way out to the bronx
and we watered it
and replanted it
and it made two sweet little spider plant babies

i planted one
[still have to cut off the cellulose umbilical tho,]
but the other came in later
and has stayed attached and ready
for just under a year now
and i was contemplating making the effort to
root it
pot it
plant it,
but
we have a bowl of water just under it
[for humidifying purposes]
and it seems some of its tendrils have found it
and now i want to see
if it will slowly make its way over
to that bowl
to soak up the h2o
and grow
new roots
and try to make that
its home

here i was about to do the good thing
the right thing
the thing i’ve been meaning to do
for months and months
and then an experiment falls into my lap

[young me would never believe
how hard i’d fall
for science]

we have such
dramatic plants
in this house

drooping/
withering/
shriveling up
if we water them less
than twice a week

but add water
and it’s like watching those pill pockets filled
with strange sponge creatures
slowly grow into
full being
[again]

and of course
heaven forbid we
over-water those same plants…

it’s a delicate balance
and one i’m only just starting
to learn

[hence knowing/seeing
how dramatic, really
these plants can be]

out of order,
and with a bagel in one hand,
but i’m doing it,
following my dreams and desires
(at least as far as the
morning poetry is concerned)
and the lofi is bumping
(and i can’t stop thinking
of it being labeled
‘millennial smooth jazz’)
and even though i’ve written
at least one poem
over the last three days,
the fact that the posted poems
are older than 72 hours
makes this feel…stale
(and all i really want
is for my plants to be healthy,
so i suppose
i’ll cut this short
in order to care for the greenery,
and just write/just finish/just post this singular/rambly/imperfect
poem
and hope it’s close enough
for jazz
(or for lofi, as the case may be)
