eradicate one war
and we’ll throw a tantrum on the oval office floor
because we’re all just children
trying to impress daddy
trying to get back the love we never found
and we think that adoration is one step above
and fear another

but inside, those who start wars
are empty inside
and just trying to fill their own souls’ holes
with explosions of others’

i can’t teach the lessons
that they’ll never learn even from their own experiences

but i can make sure i never forget
my own humanity
and empathy
in any part of my life inside me

[and that’s why i vote with my conscience
for those with a
conscience]

literally
nothing
is set in stone

even stone is ephemeral

everything passes by
the sky wasn’t the sky
before there was a planet to help hold it in
and even the stars have beginnings and endings

so the rules we all have made up
for gender
for money
for even morality
nothing
nothing
nothing
is solid

we are all flowing through —
visitors to reality

let’s treat ourselves like guests
and stop trying to make our rules stick
to a place that will never ever ever have
anything
to stick to

interestingly
i am not a perfectly moral being

and i feel like the few times i’ve
strayed
from the morality i’d like
have influenced me the most
in keeping kindness and honesty
at the top of my
values tree

[now why can’t my perfectionism hear that
and substitute in “mistakes”
and feel like making them
would just make my talent and skills
even
greater???]

whenever folks have asked me, lately,
how i’m doing
[as a regular “good morning”/“hello again!” introduction]
i always answer honestly
[because i really can’t not
unless i’m in the midst of going somewhere else
and only have the time for the word “fine”]
i’ve been answering
after a pause
“good? i mean, if i’m not thinking about
the state of the world
and our country
and the eroding rights
that no one in power
seems to be stopping,
yeah, i’m actually, surprisingly, doing well.
but, you know, the minute i think about
anything outside of myself
i fall apart”

and the folks who have asked me
nod in agreement
then sigh and shake their heads in disgust
and we begin a dialogue
about all the terror
located in our nations capital
[and all over]

and while this hostile government takeover/
overt turn into fascism
is actively terrifying and illegal and immoral
it is making it okay
to talk about government abuses
in the day to day,
and be honest
that we shouldn’t actually
be okay,

so i suppose i’ll give it that.

[strangely, does fascism bring us all in
closer to community
because we actively, finally, see
what we all so desperately need?]

the plight of the whistleblower
is to have enough morality
that you step forward,
but to have enough tactical planning
to get yourself in the space to have the evidence
first

i wish
i wish i
wish i could be
that tactical
[or that close to valuable info]

but the moment i feel uncomfortable
morally
i either shout it out to/from the rooftops
or speed away in the opposite direction

[one of many reasons i’m never privy to any sensitive information]

i suppose i’m trying to convey that
i’m proud of anyone who can stay in a situation,
gathering,
without losing themselves

whistleblowers, you have my great respect

now if only your evidence counted for anything
in this clownshow of a government

make up for something you’ve done,
a sin or just
a blunder,

and see how long it takes
for you to forgive yourself
vs
how long it takes
for others
to even realize
you’ve done
wrong.

i’m unsure the point i’m trying to make with this poem,
but i think it has something to do with
our own perceptions of our own
moralities —
and while i’d rather my friends live
guilt-free lives,
i’d also rather have as friends
those who make sure to
do right by those they’ve wronged
well past when we’ve forgotten,
than those who think their morality
is beyond
reproach

pondering philosophies —
i wonder why i
seem to flounder when it comes to
strong opinions and staunch stances

but that’s just from the inside

if i zoom out, i realize
i do have a very strong morality —
a constant running baseline
that i live my life by:
kindness

and if i zoom out a little further,
i can see how living my life
with so much pressure and hatred towards myself
is in direct opposition to my main focal philosophy…
perhaps
perhaps
perhaps
i need to be kind to myself
in order to feel more like
the myself i would like
to be
