how has it only been one week
since we stampeded
through lower manhattan

a week ago this time, we still didn’t know what it was like
to be inside our buffalo for two hours
going
and going
in humidity so oppressive
i sweat more than i ever have
in my life

a week ago this time, we still had training to do
and things to learn
and choreography to go over

a week ago this time, we still felt inside it
did not know what it would seem like
from the outside
what the actual event would be like
how the public would react
honestly, how we would react

how has it only been a week?

how was it only one week?

how was it only one week to train and learn and form community
and honor and become alive become a herd
get to know our particular bison so
that they each got names and were loved
absolutely loved
by each and every puppeteer?

i often joke that i don’t understand how time works
that it’s wibbly wobbly
that it’s not linear
that it’s quangled
that it’s a mortal construction
and that time is far beyond our mere understanding of it

but damn

one week feels like too long and not long enough

and an entire eternity can take place in one week
in one two hour chunk
in one moment of a styrofoam eye glancing towards
a toddler who screams “the buffalo looked at me!”

memories make our own infinities

and i hope, for everyone who experienced the buffalo
they can look back and live in a memory
for as long as they need

for even longer than the week it took to make them come to life

[i should look up how long it took to physically make
each and every
one…]

sometimes moments from my teenage self come back
to haunt my waking world.
like there’s a baby hj floating around calling out
in forlorn echoes
‘remember when you did this thing?’
or
‘remember that time your friend said that?’
and half the time i don’t actually remember
i just take them at their word

they’re closer to all that happening, temporally/emotionally, after all

[i hope they’d never lie to me]

[i hope i’d never lie to me]

[damn, i know for a fact that i’ve lied to me in the past,
what makes me different now/then…?]

chatting about things i’ve done
which i have little to no memory of
is always kind of a trip
[but i’ve come to accept it]

this poem could be titled: visits with my father

i don’t remember
a lot

my brain is a sieve where
each experience passes
lovingly
but without mercy

and sometimes big chunks do get stuck
and they are the memories i get stuck on
and replay over
and over
and over
without mercy
to my own psyche

but others show up when reminded
[thank goodness for that little brain trick]
by an object or a person
telling the same story from their perspective
and in those moments
it’s like a magic trick — the memory bursts forth
like a trick bouquet of flowers
from a magician’s shirtsleeves

and i am thrown backwards
winded from my own remembering
and hopeful this time
this time
[maybe]
that memory will be
saved
from the sieve

the problem with having dreams
about places and people you haven’t seen
in some time, is that they all tend to
mesh
and merge
together, becoming one big amalgamation of
The Past™
or This Point In My Life™
or Anyone And Anything I Haven’t Thought Of In A While™

and though i appreciate
that my brain is constantly churning
even at night
and never lets anything
go,
i do wish the memories were
clearer,
so i could actually contact
whoever my subconscious
is missing
at any given point
and actually reach out to them
and say
hello

December 1, 2025

it is december
it is december
i’m allowing myself these
twenty-five to thirty-one days
of holiday feeling

[perhaps it’s a mistake,
but,
in nyc i believe
i am not beholden to old memories —
this city makes new ones all the time
and i can learn from all of that
and all of those
and have an nyc holiday season
instead of suffering from memories
of midwest christmases
long since passed]

how can some songs
slap me in the face with memories
that i never wanted to see
again

and yet

some songs feel like
the best bear hug
from a friend
you haven’t seen in
ages?

the comfort/misery line
is razor thin

[and sometimes appears in
the middle of a measure]

but damn, these songs still slap

how come i am so hyper-aware
of every moment in time
and how they will become memories
in the next moment

so much so that, even trying to experience them, i am often thinking
fifteen minutes[at least] into the future

i feel like i was barely in the moment
of looking forward to this trip
and only in it
for half a second
and now i’m back
and looking back on
experiences i know took time to have
but now they live only in my
memory

July 6, 2025 [part 3]

i had a recovered memory
[though i still don’t know where it was from]
of dancing [something akin to the] traditional Greek dances
at some other point in my life

perhaps it was a production of fiddler
with well researched cultural expositions
or perhaps a bat mitzvah i attended once
or something else i can’t even remember the context of

but everything felt so familiar
when trying it for the first time

my life has been so filled with experiences outside my own day-to-day
and i so appreciate life that way

sometimes the yearning gets to be too much
and the decision is either to
delve deep
and inevitably find
that even as i try
to live in the memories of the moments gone by
i can’t even remember them
accurately
fully
or, sometimes,
at all

or

just pretend like i’m putting off that analysis
for another day
and put it of
and put it off
and wait
and wait
and wait for the day when
i will be able to remember accurately and fully
because of magic
or time travel
or something else entirely
[even though i know
full well
the first stanza of this poem
will never fully be fixed
so i prefer to live in this one
where the possibility
still
exists]
