perhaps
i should
accept
that the world didn’t actually
end
all the times it felt
like it did

not at the end of 1999
not in 2001
not in 2005
not in 2008 or 2012 or even 2020
so perhaps
living life
as if it’s not a secret simulation
or a fever dream
but something to make the most of
would be a smarter goal

[but that’s also so much scarier
and i need to figure out
how much push gets me going
and how much puts me in
a damn near catatonic state
of straight up fear of missing out
on everything]

February 17, 2025

the winds rush against the house
which has stood for near one hundred years
and yet my heart leaps
into my throat
and i can’t breathe
or calm the ba-BUM ba-BUM ba-BUM
because what if
what if
what if
this time, the wind really does mean
the ominous
the apocalypse
the end?

April 6, 2024

the slow increase of volume
the rumbling to shuddering
greater and greater until the only logical expectation is
a violent crash
or a collapse,
and then to just
rumble back down again
into quiet
into nothingness —
all that’s left is my heart still echoing the great shuddering
because i’m not used to it
i’m not familiar
i don’t know what to expect
i don’t know if my house will continue to stand after this
nor after the second
but we’re all still here, and we’re all still fine —
and the memes are just
sublime

[my very first/and very second
earthquake]

ten years ago
i
was bored at my home

ten years ago
i
felt community thirty minutes away
(at a college i never attended)

ten years ago
i
called out to my friends to see
if anyone would be
excited for me
to come hang out that evening

ten years ago
i
happened to [re-]meet the love of my life
and this time we were both ready
available
and actually looking
pondering each other for
conquest
and connection

but

it is not this day that we count
as our official anniversary

ten years ago today
was a preamble
a flirtation
a stuttering step towards
a beginning

tomorrow
will be the actual anniversary:
that post-midnight
that coming together
that “end of the world”
that, even if it did actually end,
and this is all a simulation in someone else’s head,
at least we got a chance to meet and be together
ten years ago
the best thing that ever happened to me
was
you

and for the past ten years
that has continued
to be
true
