The Citadel shouldn’t exist

not morally, but physically

towers upon towers of structures in space
constantly needing rebuilding and maintenance
just the right distance from the biggest wormhole in the galaxy
that somehow makes its orbit stable
[for now]

it’s been around for a thousand years now
and some towers have more modern technology
than others, and still others have weird amalgamations
of the old and the new,
and even more feel like they’re still standing
still resistant to the vacuum of space
through a hope and a prayer
and maybe some sort of space magic
we don’t yet understand

but The Citadel still stands

and it really shouldn’t, if you think about it

but no one thinks about it too long

because once you do, you wonder if it should exist at all

and once you wonder, you wonder if you made it all up

and it actually doesn’t

concept
for including more art in our rooms
and hiding the amount of
stuff
that just sits
on shelves
that we may or may not use
[but we definitely may have
some use for
at any given point]

hinged
framed
images

[paintings/printings/photos/mixed media/
anything we already have our hands on
sitting in storage
waiting for wall space we do not have —
it could all go up on our
bazillions of bookshelves
as long as the width is wide enough]

[and then we’ll have little doors
to the secret world of
craft supplies,
made of
art

how lovely!]

fall into a concept:
drag kid
for the gender you’ve always wanted to be
but couldn’t — the exaggerated child actor
[here it’s safe from sexualization, at least not
without it being weird]
[maybe]
[hopefully]
could i make the mix i want?
could i use my little kid voice acting skills
for this
silly
silly
ridiculous
possibly exactly what i need
concept?

waking up from a wild dream
with ideas for a story
but honestly, once fully awake,
there are far more questions about this concept
than an initial start to writing

but i suppose i’ll just have to see
what it may become
eventually

by writing it

build a concept
from words and stanzas,
make it stand like the structure of a house

but the house still needs full walls and floors and a roof to keep it dry
so decide:
are the walls paragraphs of a story?
is the foundation actually one a play can stand upon?
or will the covering shelter end up being a whole novel?

or will it stay a poem forever?

only reviewing and editing can do that —

but only writing the first few words
will give you the skeleton
to build upon
